100% Oshima Tsumugi, 大島紬 silk kimono textile from Amami Oshima, 奄美大島 island in Japan, dating back to the early 20th century. The patchwork incorporates an antique silk haori textile, 羽織 (a traditional Japanese jacket worn over a kimono originally designed for samurai as a practical outer layer for warmth and protection).
Oshima Tsumugi textile is a handwoven silk textile with a history dating back over 1000 years, and this garment honors the traditional craftsmanship from the Oshima region of Japan. The textile is renowned for its intricate mud-dyeing process, a technique perfected over centuries. The fabric is dyed with tannins from the te-chi tree and then immersed in the iron-rich mud of Amami Oshima, where a natural chemical reaction creates its signature deep brown and black hues. This process enhances the color's richness and strengthens the silk, making it exceptionally durable while preserving its soft, smooth texture.
The original kimono seams are preserved, honoring the garment's history and craftsmanship. Zero-waste design through hand-stitched, patchwork boro stitching and mending throughout, reflecting Japan's time-honored tradition of repairing and repurposing textiles.
Unisex, relaxed fit with a structured feel while maintaining the fluidity of silk. Shell buttons, 1930s-1960s. Raw edge detailing throughout. Each garment is cut individually by hand. One of a kind.
