Vintage kimono bolt fabric. 100% silk.
Cut from a special Japanese kimono textile is called 'Kuromontsuki' 黒紋付き, a traditional Japanese craft fabric, established in the early 17th century and made in Kyoto, Japan. It is known for its graceful, deep black color and is the highest quality of formal kimono with family crests. The back yoke detail is cut from a vintage 'Houmongi' 訪問着 kimono, a semi-formal visiting kimono.
The pattern is cut from a black 'Tanmono' 反物, a roll of cloth to make a kimono. Traditionally, a kimono is constructed from bolts of silk measuring 14" / 35-37cm wide, and the pattern is developed and carefully laid out to maintain the narrow width.
The inside ombre combo and back yoke are designed, hand-sewn, and constructed from vintage silk kimono and lining remnants. Detailed with a center front placket with shell buttons, side paneling, and single-button cuffs.
Every piece is one of a kind and hand-numbered. All wear and idiosyncrasies are unique to the textile. Handcrafted by artisans in New York City.
